When Giants Fall: The Fragility of Civilizations

June 16, 2023

We now live in the most advanced civilization in the history of mankind, but in the course of our long history, many civilizations have fallen back or perished. In this article, we will consider how difficult it would be to revive our civilization if it were to fall back or perish!

For almost a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire, no advanced civilization like Rome's was able to recover. During the Dark Ages of the Middle Ages, civilization regressed much further than in Roman times, and the advanced Roman culture represented by the public baths was gone. Even the aqueducts did not produce anything comparable to those built during the Roman period.

And buildings, for example, had lost the Roman technique of stone arches and domes. Even for solid buildings, they were only able to put stone underneath and build a wooden hut on top of it. A civilization as low (for lack of a better word) as a pit dwelling, for example, would be able to recover quickly after a setback or collapse. However, if our current civilization were to regress, it would likely take many years to revive its technology.

Especially in the field of machinery and electronics, what our predecessors have accumulated is too great. From the invention of the light bulb to the invention of the personal computer, our present lives are made possible by the accumulation of a tremendous number of inventions and discoveries. As proof of this, most of us cannot fix a broken phone by ourselves, even with the help of our relatives and acquaintances. We have to take it to a specialized repair shop, and even specialized repair shops do not fix it based on their understanding of the principles, but rather on a manual. This is despite the fact that smartphones are a necessity in our daily lives and are the most familiar thing to us. So our civilization has become so advanced that once it collapses, we are at a point where it will take quite a few years to bring it back.

Like the advanced Roman civilization, I think that when our advanced civilization regresses, like the Dark Ages, we may not be able to recover our technology for a long period of time. This time we have been thinking about what happens when our current civilization regresses, and I can't really imagine what would cause such a thing to happen. What immediately comes to mind is when the world is at war again, but ... .
