This is a painting of a Dutch waterfront. The boat in the foreground has 11 people, 4 horses, 5 dogs, and 2 cows on board. I was worried that the boat might capsize. The boat in the distance is also crowded with passengers. The artist, Salomon van Ruisdael, was a Dutch painter and a genius at painting landscapes with water. The composition shows a bank lined with trees on the right and an expanse of water on the left. The spatial compression of the right side by the trees gives the viewer a sense of openness and a sense of the openness of the water that extends to the horizon on the left side.
