The Truth About Lead in Lipstick: A Harmful Myth?

June 19, 2023

Lipsticks may contain heavy metals such as "lead" that are toxic to the human body. Lead" can cause nerve palsy and abdominal pain if ingested over a long period of time. Once accumulated in the body, it is also difficult to expel. According to an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) study in the 2000s in the U.S., on average, lead contained about one-tenth of the allowable amount. (Well, it's pretty low, so that means it's okay.) Japan is no exception, as it imports many American brand lipsticks. In addition, since lipstick is applied to the mouth, it can be swallowed as it is, making it a cosmetic product that can easily take in toxins into the body. In addition to lipstick, cosmetics such as foundation and whitening cream may also contain heavy metals. In addition to lead, heavy metals may also include cadmium, arsenic, and mercury. Since cosmetics are applied to the body, lead is said to be absorbed through the skin, but in very small amounts Heavy metals such as lead are not ingredients in cosmetics, but are allowed to be included in products if they are adulterants.

If a heavy metal is unintentionally included in a natural raw material such as some colorants or water used in the production of cosmetics, it does not have to be listed as an ingredient.

Here is a quote from Shiseido's website.

If there is a concern that an impurity that may affect safety or quality is contained in a product, Shiseido will remove the impurity or otherwise confirm the safety of the product before using it. On the other hand, there are cases where it is difficult to completely remove impurities. One example is heavy metals contained in naturally occurring raw materials. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium are known to have adverse effects on human health if ingested in large quantities, but since they are widely present in nature, including soil, air, and water, they may also be present in food and drinking water in small amounts. Similarly, some cosmetic raw materials are naturally derived, and therefore, very small amounts of heavy metals present in raw materials may be contained in products. Shiseido sets its own standards for each raw material after ascertaining the amount of very small amounts of heavy metals contained in the raw material, and uses only those materials that have been confirmed to be at safe levels. -- 資生堂 HP

The exact amount of heavy metals contained in cosmetics that affect the human body is not known. It will vary from person to person, depending on the amount ingested at one time. Even though it is about one-tenth of the permissible amount, it would be better to use cosmetics such as lipstick knowing that they contain trace amounts of lead and other metals that are toxic to the human body. Well, if you put it that way, food products also contain trace amounts of lead (laughs) The FDA has set the following allowable levels of lead

Lipstick: 10 ppb Candy: 0.1 ppb Juice: 0.05 ppb (1 ppb means it contains one part per billion.) Since the intake of food is higher than that of cosmetics, the allowable amount is lower.
