Tonic water is used in the tropics. Tonic water was first drunk in tropical regions as a medicine for malaria. The substance called quinine contained in tonic water was effective against malaria. Quinine has a distinctive bitter taste, which is one of the reasons why tonic water became so popular. Quinine comes from the quinina plant. This is what a wild quinina tree looks like.

The quinina family of plants originally grew in the Andes Mountains of South America, where the indigenous people used the bark of the quinina tree as an antipyretic. Then, by chance, it was discovered that quinina bark was effective in treating malaria, and it was taken as a malaria medicine. And quinine was very useful in World War II and the Vietnam War as a special remedy for malaria.

Later, artificial malaria drugs were developed, and quinine, which could cause side effects and allergies, was used less and less. Most tonic water sold today is made with a small amount of quinine and fragrance. Tonic waters sold in Japan do not contain quinine, except for imported ones. If you look into it, you will find that there are quite a lot of foods and drinks that were originally medicines.
