Addressing Food Waste: Spotlight on Popular Apps

October 3, 2023

The problem of food waste is very serious. If we assume that food waste is a country, it would rank third behind the United States and China in terms of emissions. In fact, about 40% of the food produced in the world is thrown away unused.

Because of this situation, apps that allow consumers to purchase surplus, approaching expiration, or misshapen food at discounted prices have been gaining attention in recent years.

One such app, "Too Good to Go," has been particularly popular. The app allows consumers to purchase "surprise bags" of leftover food from local restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores for the day. These bags are offered for about $3-$5, but the food inside is reportedly worth three times that amount. The app launched in Europe in 2015, with service beginning in the U.S. in October 2020.

Another app that has received a lot of attention is Misfits Market. This app specializes in selling misshapen fruits and vegetables that are typically discarded or not purchased in supermarkets. Buyers can choose from mostly certified organic and non-GMO products, and Misfits sources those foods directly from farmers and sends them to customers on a regular basis at 30%-50% off retail prices.

Some experts, however, point out that these apps alone are unlikely to solve the underlying problem of food waste. Some argue that to truly address the causes of food waste, the entire food supply system needs to be overhauled, not just the apps.
