Grading Punny Taglines: A Dive Into Corporate Wordplay

July 24, 2023

Today, we’re grading well-known companies' pun-inspired taglines often featured in commercials and other media.

Using my personal discretion, I’ll rate them based on two criteria:

  1. How well the tagline represents the company.

  2. The rhythm and rhyme of the tagline.

Each tagline will be scored out of five.

Calpis (a Japanese beverage company)

"Peace for your body, Calpis"

Representation of the company: ★★☆☆☆

Rhythm and rhyme: ★☆☆☆☆

Comment: There’s a humorous disconnect here, as it sounds like “Cow Piss” in English—a pun that’s hard to unhear!

Intel (tech giant)

"Intel Inside"

Representation of the company: ★★★☆☆

Rhythm and rhyme: ★★★★★

Comment: The original international tagline, “Intel Inside,” cleverly incorporates “in,” and the Japanese version maintains this pun, rhyming beautifully. It’s a linguistic miracle!

Seven Eleven (global convenience store chain)

"Seven Eleven, iikibun(feeling good in Japanese)"

Representation of the company: ★★☆☆☆

Rhythm and rhyme: ★★★★★

Comment: The repetition of the “-even” sound is pleasing to the ear, with a nice ascending rhythmic pattern. Very catchy!

Ajinomot (food and chemical corporation)

"Ashitanomotoni(The base for tomorrow in Japanese), Ajinomoto"

Representation of the company: ★★☆☆☆

Rhythm and rhyme: ★☆☆☆☆

Comment: “The base for tomorrow” uses six characters, while “Ajinomoto” has five, disrupting the balance. If it were symmetrical, the rhythm would improve.

Volks Wagen (automaker)

"Gokigen (Feeling good in Japanese), Wagen"

Representation of the company: ★☆☆☆☆

Rhythm and rhyme: ★★★★☆

Comment: They’ve dropped the “Volks” part, haven’t they? It’s easier to say, and the rhythm is good, but it feels a bit forced.

Kumon (educational network)

"Kumon ikumon (Go to Kumon in Japanese)" (educational network)

Representation of the company: ★★★★☆

Rhythm and rhyme: ★★★★★

Comment: “Go to Kumon!” sounds like something a child would say, tying nicely into children's education. The tagline is spot on with rhythm and rhyme.

Kaneka (chemical manufacturer Kaneka)

"Kagakude negaiwo kanaeru kaisya(The company that realizes wishes through science in Japanese)"

Representation of the company: ★★★★★

Rhythm and rhyme: ★★☆☆☆

Comment: This tagline does a solid job depicting what the company does, even if it’s a bit of a mouthful.

Conclusion

What’s your favorite? Mine is “Go to Kumon” for its cleverness!

If you know of any other taglines with fun puns, feel free to share.
