Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch was a Dutch painter. He was a member of a Dutch art group called the Hague School.The Hague school was heavily influenced by the realism of the French Barbizon school (The Barbizon artists' colony). This painting was painted during their pilgrimage to their sacred city of Barbizon (south of Paris). He was 76 years old when he painted this picture.
