President Lukashenko, in his 26th term, rigged the 2020 election, declaring himself to have received 80% of the vote. In response, the Belarusian people staged a massive protest. Lukashenko allegedly arrested and tortured protesters. Belarus has become a problem because Belarus tells refugees without Poland's approval that you can go through Belarus, and many refugees illegally try to cross the border with Poland. European countries view this as a state-sponsored hijacking. Roman Protasevich was a member of the opposition to Alexander Lukashenko's regime, organizing protests and social media groups.
