Nanjing Fall Sale: A Historical Glimpse

May 10, 2023

The photo shows the entrance ceremony by Japanese troops into Nanjing Castle. In 1937, during the Sino-Japanese War, Japanese forces fell and occupied Nanking. At that time, Japanese troops are said to have massacred and looted the civilian population of Nanjing. The number of victims is said to have ranged from several thousand to 300,000. In such a situation, the Japanese people, unaware of the reality of the war, were in a festive mode against the war.

Newspapers carried many articles celebrating the fall of Nanking.

Flags reading "Celebration of the Fall of Nanking" were raised here and there, and department stores and stores held sales to celebrate the fall of Nanking. The "Sale of the Fall of Nanking" is just like a professional baseball championship sale now, isn't it? Later on, when Japan defeated Singapore in the Pacific War, the people celebrated the "Fall of Singapore" as well.
