Fainting Goats: A Blend of Survival, Human Intervention, and Virality

July 9, 2023

There are goats called fainting goats. This breed of goat originates from Tennessee, USA, and is called fainting goats in English. When startled, the goat's muscles freeze in place for about 10 seconds. Their legs remain straight and pinned, and they fall over on their sides. This is not actually fainting; the patient is conscious. After falling for about 10 seconds, the person is able to move normally as if nothing had happened.

This characteristic is caused by a genetic condition called congenital myotonia. Myotony means "a temporary stiffening of the muscles". Fainting goats are also called "myotonic goats". And kid goats are more prone to collapse than adult goats. Adult goats have experienced myotonia for many years and are accustomed to it, so they may continue to run even with awkward gait. This genetic trait, called congenital myotonia, can occur not only in goats, but also in horses, dogs, cats, and humans.

The fact that they are unable to move when startled means that they are easily caught by their natural enemies. The first reason is that farmers who raised sheep took advantage of the stunned goat's ability to move when startled. They placed fainting goats with their flocks of sheep to attract wolves and coyotes if they attacked them. The stunned goats would be so startled that they would get stuck and be eaten by their natural enemies, while the sheep could escape. The second reason is that climbing or jumping on something also often causes fainting, so the chances of a goat escaping over the fence of a pasture or corral are very low. So they are easy to keep as pets or livestock. For these two reasons, fainting goats were convenient from a human standpoint, which helped their breeding.

Also, the fainting goat is now a spectacle to watch as it faints. We can't help but laugh, but it is a terrible nuisance for the goats. Some YouTube videos of fainting goats have been viewed more than 10 million times. Here is a video of a "fainting goat" falling over.

Some people are against the idea of fainting goats as pets and for show, but if humans do not keep them as livestock or pets while protecting them, they will be killed by their natural enemies and become extinct. The goats are protected because people come to see the fainting goats, which leads to profits for the ranch. This is a difficult problem. This is a cute but sad story about fainting goats.
