The youngest mischievous brother is interrupting his sister's piano practice by trying to climb onto a chair. The middle brother is watching and laughing with amusement. The older sister turns around and raises her hand (elegantly). The older sister's disappointed face is very natural. The placement of the three is well balanced, and the composition is very well defined. The artist of this picture, Mr. van der Kooij, is a very good painter of children. It is not known whether he actually sketched the children or only imagined them. Van der Kooij believed that a society would come where children would grow up to be good citizens through educational play. This smiling painting may be his ideal of such children.
