The overall tone of this painting is dark. However, only the woman's dress in the center (note that her face is painted dark) is characterized by a distinct shade of light purple and green. Jan Steen was from Leiden, a southern town in the Netherlands, where he attended Latin school. (The famous Rembrandt was also from Leiden and attended Latin school.)
