Cheese, apples, nuts, olives, glasses and wine are all depicted very realistically. Floris van Dyck was one of the pioneers of Dutch still life painting, which was very popular in the 17th century. The artists who painted still lifes not only developed their painting techniques, but also used metaphors and other forms of expression. For example, the cheese stacked in the center of the painting is a young cheese topped with a darker, matured cheese, and at the top is a darker cheese. This is said to represent the change of life, or old age. And since the cheese in this painting is a fermented food, it is associated with "rotting" (="not good"). So it is possible that the 17th century viewers understood this painting of a feast with wine as an encouragement to the temperance movement.
