The paintings presented here are Oopjen Coppit and Marten Soolmans, two works painted by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1634 (around age 28). Marten and Oopjen are the only couple Rembrandt painted standing full-length, life-size. Marten was the son of a well-to-do Amsterdam family, and Oopjen was the eldest of three daughters of a prominent Amsterdam family. Oopjen was 23 years old at the time, had been married for a year, and was pregnant with their first child. To celebrate their marriage, the two families commissioned Rembrandt, the best painter in the city of Amsterdam.
